The Big Silent Star of the book

Nope, it is not Marta, she is a little silent star. The big silent star of this book is the huge white pine that blocked the river and required canoeists and kayakers to portage around the tree for the entire summer of 2017. This photo is on page 39, in Chapter 4. Power of the River – Erosion at Boggy’s Camp. The chapter summarizes our two decade work on the river bank to grow dogwood and other vegetation to stabilize the bank, and then the subsequent erosion caused by people dragging their boats around this tree. The following spring the high river flows dislodged the tree, which then ripped out a small white pine and much of our stabilized bank.

This white pine is the tall leaning tree shown in the 2010 cover painting by Kaye Krapohl.

The base of the tree is still standing on the river bank, as shown in this 2024 photo.
